The top nine nations with the most nuclear weapons in the world as of 2025:Today’s globe is in danger of developing nuclear weapons, mostly because of increased geopolitical tensions and unheard-of levels of insecurity.
Despite the seeming substantial progress made in reducing nuclear arsenals since the Cold War, the rate of reduction has significantly slowed, leaving the world’s nuclear warhead stockpile at dangerously high levels.
Notably, 88% of the world’s overall nuclear arsenal and 84% of the bombs that are easily accessible for military use are held by the “two superpowers” of the Cold War era—the United States and Russia.
But now, both countries are gradually reducing their arsenals by removing deactivated bombs; a number of other nations, including China, India, and Pakistan, are purportedly increasing their nuclear arsenals.
Although no other nuclear-armed state now believes that it needs more than a few hundred nuclear weapons for national security, the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) estimate indicates that as of early 2025, the top nine nuclear-armed nations together possessed approximately 12,331 warheads.
