Trump said he thinks India will reduce its tariffs on American goods.

Despite reiterating his threat to impose reciprocal US tariffs on India beginning April 2, President Donald Trump has stated that he hopes the country will reduce its duties on American goods. Trump talked about the US relationship with India in an interview with the American news, opinion, and commentary website Breitbart News.

Trump stated that he had a “very good relationship” with India when asked about his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month. According to the publication, Trump stated, “But the only problem I have with India is that they are one of the highest tariffing nations in the world.”

“We will be charging them the same tariffs they charge us on April 2, but I think they are probably going to be lowering those tariffs significantly.” Trump did not specifically name China when he was questioned about the India-Middle East-Europe-Economic Corridor (IMEC), an agreement he inked with the US during Modi’s visit to the US. Instead, he described it as a “group of wonderful nations” collaborating to “counter other countries that look to hurt us on trade.”

Trump declared, “We have a strong group of trading partners.”

But once more, we cannot allow those partners to mistreat us. The publication cited Trump as adding, “To be honest, we perform better in many ways with our enemies than we do with our friends.”

Trump claimed that in certain situations, “those that would not be as friendly to us treat us better than those that are supposed to be friendly, like the European Union, which treats us terribly on trade.”

They would be viewed as allies by India and everyone else. For others, I can say the same. However, this coalition of amazing countries is fighting back against those that try to harm us in trade,” he continued.

Trump has previously referred to India as a “big abuser” and a “tariff king.”

Under a bilateral trade agreement, India has stated that it was considering strengthening its commercial relations with the US, particularly by lowering tariff and non-tariff trade barriers.
