Robert Lewandowski makes history, breaks La Liga record in Barcelona’s win over Girona

After turning 36, Robert Lewandowski of Barcelona has made history by surpassing Ferenc Puskas to become the first player with the most goals in La Liga. The Hungarian legend, who had scored 21 goals after turning 36, had previously held the legendary record.

Robert Lewandowski breaks Ferenc Puskas record

On Sunday, March 30, the former attacker for Bayern Munich helped Barcelona win a vital 4-1 match over Girona with two goals. When Lewandowski scored his first goal in the 61st minute, the score was knotted at one. Lewandowski had been helped by Fermin Lopez.

Lewandowski increased the Catalan’s advantage to 3-1 in the 77th minute, putting his name on the scoresheet once more. The squad overtook Real Madrid in the standings after Ferran Torres scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute.

Lewandowski, who turned 36, had scored 20 goals in the highest division of Spanish football before to the game. The former Borussia Dortmund player has now surpassed the Real Madrid icon with this. With 42 games across all competitions this season, the Poland international has scored 38 goals and provided three assists, demonstrating his outstanding play.

In addition, he has scored 25 goals this season, making him the top scorer in La Liga. Kylian Mbappe, in second place, is three points behind this. In fact, Lewandowski has scored in eight of Barcelona’s last nine games.

Barcelona star makes huge claim after their win over Girona

Barcelona’s defender Eric Garcia stated that every game left will be a “final” for the Catalans as they aim to win another La Liga championship after their 4-1 victory over Girona on Sunday. Garcia, who began the game for Barcelona as a defensive midfielder, won two duels and had a 94% passing accuracy rate.

With a nine-game winning streak and their most recent loss occurring in December 2024, Hansi Flick’s club is now riding high. With 66 points after 29 games, they are three points ahead of Real Madrid, who are in second place.

 

However, in the current season, Real Madrid has won 19 games overall. On Wednesday, April 2, Barcelona will play Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals.
