One meme at a time, Gen Z is DMing their way into relationships.

Consider this scenario: you use a dating app to find a cute person, and after a quick exchange of interests, you connect on social media. The discussion flows and the banter is enjoyable. You come across their “like” on a particularly amusing post while scrolling through memes and reels. The fact that they are fans of the same band as you makes you grin! Another common passion to discuss.

You might spend hours monitoring the postings they have liked in an attempt to ascertain their tastes and desires if you were a little obsessive. However, you email them a meme, which is the wiser course of action. What kind of meme do you send first? That is the catch. As you try to choose the most endearing, humorous meme that best captures your personality in one glance, decision paralysis sets in.

That is how effective memes have gotten in today’s dating world. They create or destroy relationships, mold first impressions, and identify warning signs.

Joshua Thakur would rather begin with innocuous or relatable hilarious memes. “I gradually push the envelope with political or even slightly politically wrong jokes if they react favorably. The goal is to determine whether they understand and whether we can start a dialogue. Great if people connect with it! If not, I know to turn it down,” the Hyderabad advertising executive stated.

Does meme compatibility matter in dating today?

Sonali Sachdeva claims that since sharing memes and reels is an easy method to express, “I thought of you!” it has become a commonplace mode of communication. She ensures that the memes she shares with her boyfriend are quite relatable. It might be inspired by a shared experience, a circumstance that both of us can relate to, or even an inside joke. The PR professional stated, “I think memes are a great way to connect, whether through humor or something more profound.”

Sachdeva likes to mix emotive reels with deeper significance with lighter fun. “A well-chosen meme or video can say it all, but sometimes words can not express certain emotions,” she remarked.

She also thinks she can better understand her spouse because to the memes he shares. “For instance, it is easy to tell whether he connects with music on a professional level or is just a passionate listener if he sends me music-related videos on a regular basis,” she added. According to her, memes are more than just informal conversations; they are representations of character, feelings, and connection.

Can memes shape our perception of someone?

According to Prakriti Bhat, memes have evolved into a simple compatibility metric. “Memes were a minor but important part of understanding each other in my previous relationship,” she stated.

She began seeing someone after her breakup who sent her lighthearted memes that made her giggle without using crude language. He believed I would like the memes he provided. It was more than simply him. It was about connecting and developing a sense of humor. Additionally, I would email him memes that I knew he would find funny even if I didn’t. Even if I had not seen the show personally, I would email him memes about it if he like it, she added.

Siddhi Jojare, however, holds a different opinion. Memes should not be taken too seriously, in my opinion. You are merely interested in the individual; you hardly know them. It is foolish to judge someone by that,” she remarked.

Jojare also revealed that some of the persons she was considering had attempted to convey messages or give clues through reels and memes, which she ascribed to their “negative intentions and character.”

Everyone attempts to discover their greatest match in the game of dating. Certain individuals shape themselves into something they are not. People frequently follow and share stuff that reflects them because memes show our maturity and awareness, according to Supriya Debnath.

He believes that humor is crucial, but social awareness is even more important.

“Unless it walks that thin line between being funny and offensive, I would not take a meme lightly if it touches on serious social issues like casteism, racism, or LGBTQ rights,” the publicist from Bangalore stated.
