MeitY’s native web browser development contest is won by Zoho.

A solution created by the domestic IT services provider Zoho took first place in the Indian Web Browser Development Challenge, which was declared by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY). Team PING’s and Team Ajna’s solutions were ranked second and third, respectively.

Speaking at the event, IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the Government of India’s overarching goal of turning India from a service nation into a “product nation” that is self-sufficient in hardware and software. In order to facilitate the broad adoption of domestic digital solutions and to encourage startups and industry to create competitive, safe, and scalable technologies that support India’s independence, the minister also emphasized the necessity of quickening the transition from innovation to large-scale productization.

Designing a browser with a range of essential features, such as a dedicated trust store with a CCA India Root certificate, digital signing within the browser, child-friendly browsing, parental controls, seamless compatibility with all official Indian languages, Web3 support, and state-of-the-art browser capabilities, was part of the challenge, which had three progressive stages: ideation, prototype, and productization.

According to an official release, eight of the 434 teams who entered the challenge advanced to the final round, where a jury assessed their inventions.
