Bengaluru: In a meaningful moment for regional journalism, the digital media platform Kannada News Today has been recognised for its consistent work in reporting stories that matter to the people. The cultural organisation Janapada Mattu Kreeda Sangha presented the platform with the title of Atyuttama Pradeshika Suddi Mula (Best Regional News Source), acknowledging its ongoing contribution to Kannada-language journalism.
Started in March 2019 by journalist Satish Raj Goravigere, Kannada News Today began as a digital experiment in local reporting. Over time, it has grown into a dependable source for news that reflects the voices and challenges of everyday citizens. The site regularly covers civic issues, government schemes, and community-driven efforts from across Karnataka.
The award committee cited the outlet’s focus on people’s concerns and responsible news delivery as key reasons for the recognition. It also praised the platform’s effort to keep regional language news relevant in a fast-changing digital landscape.
Founder Satish Raj Goravigere said the award was not just a matter of pride but also a reminder of the work ahead. He noted that the team’s goal has always been to make news accessible, fair, and focused on the truth. According to him, awards like these are encouraging but the real success lies in maintaining public trust.
Beyond Kannada, the team has also launched Timesnib, an English-language platform. This expansion was designed to connect with wider audiences while keeping the original focus on meaningful journalism. Together, the two outlets have built a bridge between rural and urban stories, bringing attention to topics that are often missed by larger networks.
The journey has not been without setbacks. Recently, the official Facebook page of Kannada News Today was hacked and remained locked for several weeks. After going through formal complaints and digital verification, the team was able to recover access. Satish said this incident was a reminder of the risks that small and independent news outlets face while maintaining their online presence.
In terms of technology, the platform is also exploring new ways to present news. It is one of the early Kannada platforms to use AI-based presenters for news videos. The virtual anchors are designed to look and sound natural, helping the platform keep up with digital viewing habits without losing the human connection.
The recognition from Janapada Kala Mattu Kreeda Sangha has given fresh energy to the team. It also shines a light on the importance of regional media in building an informed society. As local platforms like Kannada News Today continue their work, they remind us that credible journalism begins with a strong connection to the community.
