For many people, retirement marks the end of a long professional chapter. For Dr. Pulak Sahay, it became the beginning of a deeply creative and socially meaningful phase of life.
After dedicating 38 years to the NHS , Dr. Sahay, a Consultant Gastroenterologist, shifted his focus toward poetry, wildlife photography, painting, and charity work. Yet his central mission remained unchanged — helping people.
During his medical career, he served as Upper GI Cancer Lead and became increasingly concerned about the lack of public awareness surrounding Reflux Disease. In response, he founded CARD (Campaign Against Reflux Disease) in 2010, a UK registered medical charity, committed to patient education and support.
A Lifelong Passion for the Arts
Alongside medicine, Dr. Sahay always carried a strong love for the arts. He spent decades acting in theatre productions ranging from Shakespeare to Arthur Miller, performing major roles in plays such as King John in “King John”, Earl of Warwick in “Henry VI”, and Malvolio in “Twelfth Night”.
His artistic work later expanded into painting and poetry. In 2024, he published “A Bouquet of Poems”, a collection that reflects on human emotions, truth, suffering, hope, and the deeper meaning of life. The book later received recognition after its launch, at the House of Lords, by Lord Parekh in April 2025.
Poetry Inspired by a Life of Experience
“All forms of art speak to human emotion in different ways,” says Dr. Sahay. “Poetry became another way for me to communicate feelings gathered through years of medicine, theatre, and life.”
His writing draws from decades of experience, bringing together lessons from medicine, the stage, travel, and everyday human emotions.
More Creative Work Ahead
His upcoming wildlife photography book, “Wildlife Wonders – A Journey into the Wild”, captures photographs taken across all seven continents, over nearly two decades.
Through medicine, literature, photography, and charity, Dr. Pulak Sahay continues to show that service to society can take many forms.
